Locke & Key, A Hit or Miss Netflix Show?
Netflix just recently released another binge worthy series called Locke & Key Feb. 7. It is based off the comic Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. This show has had a journey as it was originally going to air on Fox in 2011. Luckily, Netflix picked it up. The show fits like a glove as it is like Stranger Things and The Haunting of the Hill House. They have made a defined story that moves well and, at least at the start, is just scary enough to make the squeamish viewer hang in there at the same time as giving the horror fan simply enough to need more. Locke & Key is an entertaining and scary show that keeps viewers wanting more through its setting, characters, theme and plot.
Following the murder of their father, Rendell Locke (Bill Heck), Nina (Darby Stanchfield) and her children Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), Tyler (Connor Jessup) and Kinsey (Emilia Jones) move from Seattle to a small town in Massachusetts. This was due to their father being shot to death by Tyler’s classmate, Sam Lesser (Thomas Mitchell Barnet). Interestingly enough, Lesser was wanting to know about the Key House. Tyler and Kinsey do not understand why they must move, but Nina feels it is a fresh start.
The Key House is a massive mansion that has been in the Locke family for decades. They are greeted by Rendell’s brother Duncan (Aaron Ashmore), who oversees its upkeep. When arriving, Bode is excited to explore and he finds a well house with a well inside. He takes a picture, but it falls down the well; when he sees that the picture has been placed by him again, he calls down to the bottom of the well and a demon named Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) answers.
The home where they hope to find peace just became a little less peaceful. Dodge demands for Bode to find every key and give them to her. Bode ends up giving Dodge the anywhere key and she vanishes. He soon then realizes that she is evil and will not give her anymore keys. Yet, she always finds a way to stir things up. With the help of Kinsey and Tyler, they help Bode in retrieving and protecting the keys.
By the end of the first episode, the children all know about the magic keys. The show will revolve around their journey to find out more and who to let in on the secret. As the show progresses, you learn on who you can really trust as some of the friends are not who they say.
The whole town knows about the Locke family and are all interested to say the least. Nina becomes close with Ellie Whedon (Sherri Saum) who had known Rendell since they were teens. While Bode becomes close with her son, Rufus Whedon (Coby Bird). Kinsey and Tyler both become close with people from their high school. Kinsey becomes really close with Scot Cavendish (Petrice Jones), and she evens joins his squad. Tyler befriends people from his hockey team and gains a love interest, Jackie Veda (Genevive Kang). The difference in these characters really brought the show together as it portrayed many different personalities.
Coping with trauma and grief was one theme throughout. The Locke children all handled it in a unique way: Tyler turns to anger, Kinsey closed herself off, and Bode turns to the keys. The mother also leaned toward taking care of the house and her children. Although, at one point, she did fall down a dark path but was able to pull through it. This allowed viewers to see the different sides of grief and how the Locke’s coped with it.
Throughout the show, it leaves the viewers with wanting more as more magical keys start appearing. Keys such as an identity, echo, anywhere, omega, head and ghost key all appear in different episodes. One of the keys, the mirror key, allows them to enter a mirror and be stuck. In the first episode, Bode finds the key and his mother enters the mirror and gets stuck. It was intense as viewers were not sure if she would make it out. The 10 episodes leaves you with anticipation for the next. You learn more about each of the Locke’s and all their friends that they made along the way. Many have already shown progression such as Kinsey, who was very to herself and became more outgoing.
Sources have said that there is no current release date for season two. Although, with how episode 10 ended, many people are hoping it will be renewed. A fan, Conner Lee said, “I really hope that there is a season two. The story isn’t over, and I want to know what happens next.” On the other hand, some viewers were not pleased by this show. A Twitter user said, “The writing throughout Locke & Key on Netflix was painfully bad. There are some cool concepts in there, but the whole show is diminished by the bad writing and thus dumb characters we’re supposed to be invested in throughout.” Although the characters did make a few bad decisions throughout the show, they ended up learning a lesson. For example, the Locke’s made a few bad decisions when using the keys. Viewers just need to give the characters time to develop as we learn more about them.
Overall, Locke & Key is a great show that keeps you entertained, scared and wanting more. It is something you can binge watch alone or with your family and friends. Learn more about the Locke’s and the mysterious Key House as you watch the drama and horror unfold.
