Blog 6: Service Journalism

The service journalism story that I am interested in writing about is how to get the best seats in the house at a concert. Whether this be through general admission, VIP or regular tickets, there is a couple of ways to do so. Many people tend to avoid the best seats due to the pricing of those tickets. Which these tickets are normally more than $100 if it is regular seating. Through general admission, it can range in price but the way to get close is to get in line early. Also, if you have VIP then most of the time you can either get into the concert early or you have good seats.

I would like for people and for myself to learn more about this topic because concerts will always be around. I love to sit close to my favorite artist because it is a unique experience. I want to see if there are new ways in getting the best seats. I do already know that many people with general admission tickets wait in line all day just to be in the front. Concert goers can gain presale access to concerts which allows you to get tickets before the general public.  Learning the ways will help you become a concert connoisseur.

Blog 5: Story Focus Sheet

Buying concert tickets can either make or break you as a concert goer. There are many challenges that one must overcome which can include; ticket prices and fees, presales, selling out and scammers. Ticketmaster is the most popular site for consumers, but it may not be the cheapest way to go. Other ticket sites are StubHub, Vivid Seats, Seat Geek and Live Nation. Throughout, this story will include tips on buying tickets, the best site and what to avoid.

Writing this story now is ideal because many artists are going on tour over the summer. Some include new and old artists that may be familiar to one’s eye. Some artists that are going on tour are Justin Bieber, Halsey, Guns N’ Roses and Elton John. Most of these tours are already on sale and some are about to go on presale. Presale is a whole new way to gain tickets, which this story will give tips on how to overcome presale.

There are many students that are concert goers at Hillsborough Community College. These students will be interested in this story because buying concert tickets can be complicated. Also, many do not know the best route to go and this should help them be experts.

The main human sources for this story will be HCC student, Sam Scubelek who has experience with buying concert tickets. Another will be Will Velez, who has been scammed with concert tickets in the past. Questions to ask Scubelek include; what websites do you use to buy tickets? What was your experience? Questions to ask Velez include; What happened when you bought tickets that were a scam? What did you learn about this experience?

Information that will be needed to complete this story includes the different ticket websites, ticket prices and fees and how to buy them. Websites to gather information will be Ticketmaster, StubHub, Seatk Geek and Vivid Seats. These sites will show the difference in ticket prices and fees and the best and cheapest seats in the house.

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

I interviewed the elected Public Defender of the 13th Judicial Circuit in Hillsborough County. Julianne M. Holt has been the PD for over 20 years, and she has done so much for her community, her clients, and her team. I selected Holt because she is my mom’s boss and I have always wanted to get to know her. I have heard a lot of good things about Holt and never bad things. This made me more intrigued and it is not every day that you get to sit down with someone as busy as her.

I prepared for this interview by figuring out when we were both available. I ended up interviewing her on a Monday, the day of her big award ceremony. She was receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Tiger Bay Club of Tampa. I also had to prepare questions that were meaningful and were straight to the point. Unfortunately, I was challenged when I was not able to record our interview. This was tricky because I had to learn how to jot down her answers quickly and effectively. I needed to be sure I did not miss anything important and quote her correctly. Luckily, I did the best I could and ended up getting everything I needed written down. In the future, I will know to come in with a quick hand and hope that my next interviewee allows me to record.

Blog 2: A Dream Interview

If I could interview anyone, it would be Harry Styles. This is not just because I am a fan, but the past three months for him had been very eventful. He currently released his second album, Fine Line, and is about to go on tour starting in April. Styles has appeared on many tv shows including Saturday Night Live, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and The Ellen Show.

These are just some of the questions that I would ask him:

  • You have your tour, Love on Tour, coming up in April. How are you feeling about it?
  • You were in the movie, Dunkirk, is there a movie that you wish you acted in?
  • How are you? How do you handle being away from your family for quite some time?
  • Your music video Adore You, was based on an island called Eroda. Would you have ever thought that you would be promoting a music video that way?
  • You just released your album, Fine Line, did you expect your album to be the #1 album of 2020? The success that has surrounded this album is just incredible.
  • Have you already started to write new songs?
  • Who got you into fashion? You have become an icon for many, and your style is incredibly unique.
  • You have appeared in a couple Gucci campaigns; how did you get into that?
  • Other than Gucci, which brand would you like to be a model for?
  • Your slogan, Treat People with Kindness, what made you come up with this?

Blog 1: Introduction

Hi! My name is Summerlin Schlemmer, I am 19 years old and I am a sophomore at Hillsborough Community College. I plan to transfer to either University of Central Florida or University of South Florida in the fall. I am majoring in Mass Communications in hopes to work within the entertainment industry whether it be through journalism or public relations. I have always been fascinated with the industry due to going to concerts. It started in 2011, when I went to my first concert to see, Big Time Rush. I fell in love with the atmosphere and the rush that came with it. I quickly realized that it was my dream to work around artists. My hobbies consist of watching YouTube, Netflix, working, and hanging out with friends and family. I also enjoy going to concerts when my favorite artists come into town. My favorite artist now is Harry Styles, hence my header on my homepage, “Treat People with Kindness”. I currently work as a delivery driver at Domino’s, which is an okay job, the tips make up for it. I have only blogged a little back in high school for my journalism class, so this is new to me. I am interested in blogging about artists, music, TV shows, and movies.
