Journalistic Writing & Reporting Blog 10: Letting Go WWE Superstars

Due to the Coronavirus, the World Wrestling Entertainment is letting go several Superstars. The WWE announced Wednesday, it had released a number of its wrestler-performers.

The wrestlers included were: Drake Maverick, Zack Ryder, Curt Hawkins, Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows, Heath Slater, Eric Young, Rowan, Sarah Logan, No Way Jose, Mike Chioda, Mike Kanellis, Maria Kanellis, EC3, Aiden English, Lio Rush, Primo and Epico.

Kurt Angle, the WWE Hall of Famer who retired and had been working backstage as a producer, was also let go.

The cut happened after Florida deemed WWE as an “essential service,” being one of the only sports to hold live events. The events will be live televised shows without an audience. WWE released a statement regarding budget cuts the company had to make in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The company said that it would reduce executive and board member compensation, decrease operating expenses and cut talent expenses. WWE said, “We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

The budget cuts are estimated to save $4 million monthly and improve cash flow by $140 million, according to WWE.

Journalistic Writing & Reporting Blog 9: One Direction Reunion

One Direction, one of the most famous boy bands, have been on hiatus since 2016. The band consisted of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik. They claimed to be going on hiatus for 18 months, which now it has been over five years. The boys decided on ending the group shortly after Zayn unexpectedly left. All members are now onto their solo careers, releasing albums and touring.

Rumor has it, the band is planning to have a reunion July 23 2020, for their 10-year anniversary. Liam Payne said, “I’m not allowed to say too much obviously, because I’d be giving it away. We have been speaking a lot more now.” Although, a future tour is ruled out, fans are not sure what to expect. Due to the Coronavirus, it is hard to tell what will happen. If we are still on lockdown, the boys may not be able to get together, butt virtually they still can.

On Monday, #OneDirectionReunion began trending on Twitter after the boys refollowed Zayn. On Google search, Zayn has gone from ‘ex-member’ to ‘vocals’ in One Direction. In addition, their official website has been reactivated as well as their apple music image being all five of the boys. However, Zayn has not mentioned or followed back the boys.

Journalistic Writing & Reporting Blog 8: WrestleMania 36

The WrestleMania That Never Was

WrestleMania 36, the Super Bowl of wrestling, was scheduled to take place April 5 2020, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The annual event is the biggest show for World Wrestling Entertainment. This event brings in millions of dollars to the city hosting it and the WWE. Due to a worldwide pandemic, every event in the U.S. was canceled or postponed including WrestleMania 36. However, CEO of WWE, Vince Mcmahon, decided to hold a two-night event that would be prerecorded at the Performance Center in Orlando, FL without an audience. The Performance Center is the training headquarters for WWE. There were many highlights in WrestleMania 36. This changed several of the matches, allowed WWE to be more creative and caused mixed emotions from the fans.

Night one was something that fans were not looking forward to because of the situation. One of the first exciting matches was when Becky Lynch defended her RAW Women’s title against Shayna Baszler. With this victory, Lynch became the longest reigning RAW Women’s Champion. She first won the championship at WrestleMania 35 against UFC Fighter, Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair. Many fans were growing tired of Lynch being champion and wanted Baszler to win. The next exciting match was the men’s tag team. This was a three-way ladder match in which one member of each team represented their respected team. John Morrison retained the tag team title; he holds with The Miz.

Canadian wrestler, Kevin Owens, fought Seth Rollins in a no disqualification match. The two men were in a heated rivalry which culminated in Owens defeating Rollins. Originally, Roman Reigns was set to wrestle Goldberg for the Universal Championship. Due to the worldwide pandemic, Reigns, who is a cancer survivor, had to opt out of the match for fears of contracting the Coronavirus. Braun Strowman replaced Reigns and ended up defeating the current Universal Champion, Goldberg.

Although, the fans were not looking forward to this WrestleMania, they ended up seeing one of the greatest matches ever performed in WWE history. AJ Styles and The Undertaker fought in a Boneyard match. Due to the pandemic, WWE was able to get extremely creative with their matches. In doing this, the two men fought out of the ring in a graveyard. It was one of the most dramatic and unique matches to ever be performed. Fans were going wild on Twitter as The Undertaker buried AJ Styles alive. Conner Lee, a WWE fan, had tickets to WrestleMania 36 and was looking forward to the grandest show of them all. Lee said, “I was beyond devastated when this event was canceled, but the boneyard match was so awesome.” The Undertaker couldn’t be prouder of his match with AJ Styles. “It was different, it was intriguing. I can’t speak for AJ but I am very proud of what we did,” The Undertaker said. This allowed for WWE to go outside the ring and pull off a performance of a lifetime.

After night one, fans were treated to a second night of WrestleMania action. On Sunday, April 5, the day of the actual event was scheduled, fans were looking forward to more unique matches. The Last Man Standing match featured Edge and Randy Orton. The two men fought throughout the Performance Center and outside the ring for almost the entire match. However, fans were disappointed because the match was too long. Fans were also disturbed by Orton’s use of a metal chain around Edge’s neck in which it appeared that Orton was trying to hang Edge. The whole match was criticized for being reminiscent of Chris Benoit’s suicide. Benoit was a former WWE wrestler that took his own life with a weight cable.

Sunday night saw the return of WWE Legend and actor, John Cena. Cena fought in a Firefly Fun House match with the bizarre fiend, Bray Wyatt. This match was more of a retrospective of Cena’s life in the WWE, and it featured some of his past personas. The match ended with Wyatt defeating Cena.

Night two resulted in the crowning of a new WWE Champion. The reigning WWE Champion was Brock Lesner. Fans are very unhappy with Lesner because he only appears part time and only defends his title in pay-per-views. Lesner was challenged by Scottish Superstar, Drew McIntyre. Fans waited patiently of the dethroning of Lesner. In a relatively short match, McIntyre defeated Lesner to become the WWE Champion. WWE Fan, Tom Mitchel said, “I was waiting for the day that Lesner loses his title. We are tired of the part time champion. I am so excited for our new reigning champ!”

Although, WrestleMania 36 was changed immensely, it did not stop the wrestlers from giving it their all. The event changed several matches, allowed WWE to be more creative and caused mixed emotions from the fans. Overall, fans were slightly pleased but would have preferred the live event. Despite the pandemic and the low expectations from the fans, WrestleMania 36 will go down in the history books as one of the unique and exciting WrestleMania of all time.

Blog 10: NEWSY

The NEWSY video I am using for my story four is their documentary, “Virology” which has multiple videos. I decided on a documentary style because it allows for me to go beyond just one video. This series of videos break down key concepts and developments through in-depth visual journalism about COVID-19. Some videos include information about social distancing, unemployment, data and research. They keep adding videos as time goes on but as of right now, they have nine videos.

The world is currently experiencing pandemic due to the Coronavirus or known as COVID-19. It has caused for many places to go on lockdown, a curfew or close down. This is a different experience for most and many do not know how to handle it. NEWSY created a documentary called, “Virology.” This is a series of videos that break down key concepts and developments through in-depth visual journalism about COVID-19. These videos are useful by allowing for viewers to learn about social distancing, hospital data, unemployment and stopping the spread.

The link below is one of the videos in the documentary. This video talks about how social media is being used even more during this pandemic. Social Media could be considered the new outside.

Journalistic Writing & Reporting Blog 7: Tonsillectomy

What to Expect from a Tonsillectomy

The tonsils are a pair of soft tissue masses that form a protective ring around the back of the mouth and nasal cavity. The tonsils help catch germs, such as viruses and bacteria and prevent them from entering the body through the nose and mouth. A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils, which is sometimes necessary to treat an underlying illness. A tonsillectomy happens through a procedure, which then patients will recover with or without complications.

A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure during which a surgeon removes the palatine tonsils from the top of a person’s throat. An Otolaryngologists (ENTs) are the ones who perform this procedure. They specialize in the treatment of diseases and conditions of the ears, nose and throat. According to WebMD, there are three diverse types of tonsils: Palatine, the top of the throat. Adenoids or tonsilla pharyngealis, which sit in the nasal cavity. Lingual tonsil or tonsilla lingualis, which are in the throat below the palatine tonsils (WebMD). Depending on the underlying issue, doctors will decide on which tonsil to remove.

A tonsillectomy may be recommended to prevent frequent, recurring episodes of tonsillitis. Other factors include sleep apnea, bothersome snoring, cancer, tonsil stones, breathing problems resulting from swollen or enlarged glands and bleeding from tonsils (WebMD).

Before the procedure, the person must make some preparations ahead of time. According to May Clinic, this includes fasting the night before the procedure and not taking anti-inflammatory medications up to two weeks before the procedure. They should also talk to their doctor about any other medications and vitamins that they are taking. Medications that must be stopped are diet pills, vitamin E, nonessential herbal supplements and in some cases, blood thinners (Mayo Clinic). These can increase the risk of bleeding and interact with anesthetics. Patients must have a ride home from the hospital. You cannot leave the hospital after surgery unaccompanied.

The procedure typically allows for the person to go home the same day.  The procedure itself takes about 30 minutes to an hour. The most common methods of removing the tonsils include cutting the tonsils out using a scalpel, using ultrasonic vibration to cut the tonsils away and cauterizing the tonsils using heat (Mayo Clinic). The person will receive general anesthesia before the procedure, which will allow for the patient to feel no pain and be asleep.

Soon after the procedure, the person will wake up in the recovery room. This is where the nurses will watch the person’s vital signs, including their blood pressure and heart rate. Once the person is stable, they will be allowed to go home. The doctor will prescribe or recommend pain medications based on the person’s needs. Along with the medication, the patient must drink plenty of fluids, eat a bland based diet consisting of foods that are easy to swallow and resting as much as possible. Patients are not able to return to work or school for about two weeks.

This procedure is common, but it can still cause complications. This includes reactions to anesthesia, bleeding at the surgical site, swelling, infection, fever, dehydration and breathing problems. Dr. Mark Tabor, M.D. said, “If there is more than one tablespoon of bright red blood or clot formed on the nose or mouth then go to the emergency room.” He goes on to say, “We will have to put you back on the operating table to fix the problem. You will know when to go.”

After surgery, patients should expect a very sore throat. They can also experience pain in ears, a low-grade fever and bad breath. The tongue and the roof of the mouth may turn white as your tonsillectomy scabs dissolve. The pain will improve for five to seven days after surgery. The patient may then likely have a slight increase in pain and may have some increased blood in the saliva. This is a result of the tonsillectomy scabs falling off. Patients should drink clear liquids only on the day of the surgery. The day after, they can begin slowly advancing to a soft diet which should last for about two weeks after surgery. Lastly, patients should avoid heavy lifting for two weeks (Mayo Clinic). Kendall Wilson, who got her tonsils out in February said, “I was not able to talk properly for about a week. It was very painful, and I had to avoid it as much as possible.” Not being able to talk is normal as patients are still healing from the procedure.

A tonsillectomy is a common procedure that doctors use to treat chronic infections of the tonsils or other complications, such as breathing or snoring. Patients will go through a procedure, then a recovery stage that can result in complications.

Locke & Key, A Hit or Miss Netflix Show?

Netflix just recently released another binge worthy series called Locke & Key Feb. 7. It is based off the comic Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. This show has had a journey as it was originally going to air on Fox in 2011. Luckily, Netflix picked it up. The show fits like a glove as it is like Stranger Things and The Haunting of the Hill House. They have made a defined story that moves well and, at least at the start, is just scary enough to make the squeamish viewer hang in there at the same time as giving the horror fan simply enough to need more. Locke & Key is an entertaining and scary show that keeps viewers wanting more through its setting, characters, theme and plot.

Following the murder of their father, Rendell Locke (Bill Heck), Nina (Darby Stanchfield) and her children Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), Tyler (Connor Jessup) and Kinsey (Emilia Jones) move from Seattle to a small town in Massachusetts. This was due to their father being shot to death by Tyler’s classmate, Sam Lesser (Thomas Mitchell Barnet). Interestingly enough, Lesser was wanting to know about the Key House. Tyler and Kinsey do not understand why they must move, but Nina feels it is a fresh start.

The Key House is a massive mansion that has been in the Locke family for decades. They are greeted by Rendell’s brother Duncan (Aaron Ashmore), who oversees its upkeep. When arriving, Bode is excited to explore and he finds a well house with a well inside. He takes a picture, but it falls down the well; when he sees that the picture has been placed by him again, he calls down to the bottom of the well and a demon named Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) answers.

The home where they hope to find peace just became a little less peaceful. Dodge demands for Bode to find every key and give them to her. Bode ends up giving Dodge the anywhere key and she vanishes. He soon then realizes that she is evil and will not give her anymore keys. Yet, she always finds a way to stir things up. With the help of Kinsey and Tyler, they help Bode in retrieving and protecting the keys.

By the end of the first episode, the children all know about the magic keys. The show will revolve around their journey to find out more and who to let in on the secret. As the show progresses, you learn on who you can really trust as some of the friends are not who they say.

The whole town knows about the Locke family and are all interested to say the least. Nina becomes close with Ellie Whedon (Sherri Saum) who had known Rendell since they were teens. While Bode becomes close with her son, Rufus Whedon (Coby Bird). Kinsey and Tyler both become close with people from their high school. Kinsey becomes really close with Scot Cavendish (Petrice Jones), and she evens joins his squad. Tyler befriends people from his hockey team and gains a love interest, Jackie Veda (Genevive Kang). The difference in these characters really brought the show together as it portrayed many different personalities.

Coping with trauma and grief was one theme throughout. The Locke children all handled it in a unique way: Tyler turns to anger, Kinsey closed herself off, and Bode turns to the keys. The mother also leaned toward taking care of the house and her children. Although, at one point, she did fall down a dark path but was able to pull through it. This allowed viewers to see the different sides of grief and how the Locke’s coped with it.

Throughout the show, it leaves the viewers with wanting more as more magical keys start appearing. Keys such as an identity, echo, anywhere, omega, head and ghost key all appear in different episodes. One of the keys, the mirror key, allows them to enter a mirror and be stuck. In the first episode, Bode finds the key and his mother enters the mirror and gets stuck. It was intense as viewers were not sure if she would make it out.  The 10 episodes leaves you with anticipation for the next. You learn more about each of the Locke’s and all their friends that they made along the way. Many have already shown progression such as Kinsey, who was very to herself and became more outgoing.

Sources have said that there is no current release date for season two. Although, with how episode 10 ended, many people are hoping it will be renewed. A fan, Conner Lee said, “I really hope that there is a season two. The story isn’t over, and I want to know what happens next.” On the other hand, some viewers were not pleased by this show. A Twitter user said, “The writing throughout Locke & Key on Netflix was painfully bad. There are some cool concepts in there, but the whole show is diminished by the bad writing and thus dumb characters we’re supposed to be invested in throughout.” Although the characters did make a few bad decisions throughout the show, they ended up learning a lesson. For example, the Locke’s made a few bad decisions when using the keys. Viewers just need to give the characters time to develop as we learn more about them.

Overall, Locke & Key is a great show that keeps you entertained, scared and wanting more. It is something you can binge watch alone or with your family and friends. Learn more about the Locke’s and the mysterious Key House as you watch the drama and horror unfold.

Blog 9: NEWSY.com

I have never heard of Newsy.com until this assignment. So, going onto the website was a first for me as I entered an unfamiliar place. I was surprised with the number of videos that I came across as I expected more articles. I also learned that there was a transcript underneath the videos which was transcribed perfectly. Throughout this website, it allowed me to explore many different areas such as their investigation, documentaries, shows and election tabs. I didn’t even know that newsy was on cable and streaming video platforms. I thought that was very interesting and different as I am used to watching the major news outlets. Newsy also advertises that their news is opinion-free which was great to see. It is always refreshing to watch or read a news source that is not bias and sticks to the facts. Most of the videos are short and simple but I kind of find them to be slow in a way since they talk more clearer and slower compared to other news outlets (which is not a bad thing).  Overall, I thought that this was a great outlet and I plan to look at their website in the future.
